Honored as a Finance & Commerce Top Project in 2025!
The Sumner Library renovation project revitalized one of Minneapolis’ most treasured historic landmarks, originally constructed in 1915. This 17,000-square foot building underwent a comprehensive transformation to meet modern standards while preserving its architectural integrity and cultural significance.
Key upgrades included mechanical infrastructure modernization, advanced lighting control systems, and the creation of vibrant new social spaces to better serve the community. A particularly complex challenge was the integration of a full fire protection system – carefully designed to ensure safety without compromising the building’s historic character.
Sustainability was a cornerstone of the project, guided by Minnesota’s B3 SB 2030 standards. The building now features high-efficiency LED lighting with automated controls, a heat pump system to reduce reliance on natural gas, and a connection to a nearby solar field for renewable energy sourcing. These enhancements resulted in an 80% reduction in Energy Use Intensity (EUI) and a 71% decrease in CO2 emissions compared to the baseline design.
