| Landmark Center, St. Paul
Built between 1892 and 1902, this six-story, neo-Romanesque building served St. Paul as a Federal Courthouse and Post Office for 65 years. One of the first surplus government buildings to be released by the General Services Administration, it was acquired in 1972 by the St. Paul-Ramsey Council of Arts and Sciences. A full restoration program was started in 1973. The initial phase of the program accommodates various cultural agencies of the Arts and Science Council. Since being completed, additional agencies have been housed in the facility. The Landmark Center project received a Design Award from the GSA for creative effort in the historic preservation and adaptive re-use of a structure, plus awards from the Minnesota American Institute of Architects and the National AIA. The projects restoration included the removal of all existing mechanical and electrical systems, and the introduction of a completely new heating, ventilating, air conditioning and electrical distribution systems, as well as fire protection and automated energy monitoring systems. |
