ADC Telecommunications

ADC Telecommunications - Shakopee

ADC Telecommunications Broadband Connectivity Group is a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility that produces coax and fiber optic components for the transmission of information. Michaud Cooley Erickson is responsible for designing the mechanical and electrical systems for its 280,000 square foot plant constructed in Shakopee, Minnesota. Manufacturing processes which occur in the facility are sheet metal stamping, plastic ejection molding and screw machining. There are also two powder paint lines.

Multiple engineering systems are required to support the more than 600 pieces of processing equipment utilizing compressed air, vacuums, natural gas, methyl chloride, solvents, cutting oil, chilled water and condensed water. In the screw machine area, a special filtration system was provided in the air handling equipment to remove aerosolized oil emitted from the manufacturing machinery. Three 480 volt substations were provided to produce the significant six megawatts of power required for the various operations.

An ultra-flexible electrical distribution system was designed to accommodate ever changing electrical load needs. Electrical rooms are located on a mezzanine level and power is distributed through numerous busways. When electrical needs are particularly heavy in one area, the flexible system utilizes power from an adjacent electrical room.
