W.E. Burger Federal Building

When MCE began work on the W.E. Burger Federal Building, the project was essentially an architectural remodeling with very little work on the forty-year-old mechanical and electrical systems. MCE pointed out to the GSA that the mechanical and electrical systems were to be exposed during the project and should be upgraded or replaced before they were canceled behind an all-new architectural veneer that would render them inaccessible for another forty years. The GSA readily agreed and commissioned a major mechanical and electrical upgrade that also expanded the architectural scope in the remodeling of this 260,650 square foot building. Remodeled spaces include courtrooms, judges’ chambers, and court reporters offices, law libraries, general office space and support spaces on every floor of the building. MCE’s electrical work included lighting design, power distribution, fire alarm systems and an emergency generator. Mechanical work included heating, ventilation, air conditioning, fire protection and a building automation system. The building is connected to the St. Paul district heating and cooling system, is designed in conjunction with the Xcel Energy Design Assistance Program and is LEED Certified Silver.
