Fairview Southdale Hospital

Michaud Cooley Erickson (MCE) has worked on several projects for Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina, MN. Most recently, MCE was involved in the addition and renovation of the Perioperative Surgery Center. This project consisted of the addition of six new operating rooms and the renovation of an additional 15 existing operating rooms. Construction of this project was completed in a series of more than 30 phases while the surgical suite remained operational. Detailed collaboration with the contractors was required to maintain the operation of the mechanical and electrical support systems while construction continued in phases around an operational surgery suite. One of the mechanical contractors best described the project as, “Trying to rebuild an engine while it is still running.” Key mechanical features include a 50,000 CFM custom rooftop unit with an integrated heat recovery system, independent pressure control of each surgery suite and the replacement of the medical oxygen system manifold serving the entire hospital. Key electrical features include a new dual feed primary service for the entire campus and a Flywheel UPS to support the surgery center during power outages.
